Name It to Tame It: The Science of Affect Labeling
Saying "I feel anxious" sounds too simple to do anything. Brain imaging says otherwise. Here is the research on why naming an emotion turns its volume down.
"Talk about your feelings" might be the oldest advice in the world, and it has always had a credibility problem: how could putting a word on an emotion possibly change the emotion? Over the past two decades, researchers, most prominently Matthew Lieberman's lab at UCLA, have put that folk wisdom in a brain scanner. The result is one of the better-replicated small effects in emotion science, and it has a name: affect labeling. Psychiatrist Dan Siegel gave it the memorable slogan "name it to tame it."
The Experiment That Started It
In a 2007 study published in Psychological Science, Lieberman and colleagues showed participants photographs of emotional faces while scanning their brains. Sometimes participants matched the face to an emotion word like "angry" or "fearful." Other times they matched the same kind of face to a gender-appropriate name. The faces were equally distressing in both conditions; only the labeling differed.
When people labeled the emotion, activity in the amygdala, the brain's threat-detection hub, dropped compared to the other conditions. At the same time, activity rose in the right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, a region repeatedly linked to putting on the brakes. The paper's title states the finding plainly: putting feelings into words disrupts amygdala activity. Choosing a word for an emotion is not a neutral act of description. It changes how the brain processes the emotion itself.
The Strange Part: Nobody Thinks It Will Work
Here is the detail that makes affect labeling unusual among regulation strategies. When researchers ask participants whether naming their feelings will help, they generally say no, and some predict it will make them feel worse. Then it helps anyway. In a 2018 review in Emotion Review, Jared Torre and Lieberman describe affect labeling as implicit emotion regulation: it reduces emotional reactivity without any deliberate attempt to feel better, and without the person believing in it. Labeling Versus a Live Tarantula
Brain scans are one thing; behavior is another. In a 2012 study in Psychological Science, Katharina Kircanski, Lieberman, and Michelle Craske recruited people afraid of spiders and had them repeatedly approach a live tarantula. During the approach, one group labeled their feelings ("I am anxious the spider will jump on me"), one group reappraised ("that little spider cannot hurt me"), one group distracted themselves, and one said nothing.
A week later, everyone tried again. The affect labeling group showed lower skin conductance, a physiological marker of fear arousal, and got closer to the spider than the other groups. The people who named the fear, rather than arguing with it or looking away from it, did best. This finding matters beyond spiders: it suggests that during hard moments, the winning move is often to state what you feel, not to talk yourself out of it.
It Even Shows Up on Twitter
In 2019, a team led by Rui Fan published a study in Nature Human Behaviour that tracked the emotional content of millions of public tweets. They looked at what happened around the moment users posted an explicit "I feel..." statement. Emotional intensity peaked right at the labeling moment and then fell off rapidly, faster for negative emotions than positive ones. It is an observational study, not an experiment, so it cannot prove cause. But it is striking that the lab effect has a visible signature in ordinary life: people name the feeling, and the feeling begins to fade.
Precision Matters: Emotional Granularity
Not all labels are equal. Psychologist Lisa Feldman Barrett and colleagues have studied what they call emotional granularity: the difference between people who experience "bad" as one undifferentiated blob and people who can tell apart irritated, disappointed, envious, and depleted. Higher granularity is associated with better emotion regulation and healthier coping. The practical upshot: "stressed" is a fine first label, and a more precise second label usually does more. Ask what kind of stressed. Dread is different from overwhelm, and each points to a different response.
How to Use It in Ten Seconds
- Notice and name. When something spikes, silently or out loud, complete the sentence "I feel ___." One word is enough to start.
- Get one level more specific. Angry becomes humiliated. Anxious becomes dread about a specific thing. Precision is where the leverage is.
- Name it, do not argue with it. The spider study is a caution against jumping straight to "this is irrational." State the feeling first.

The Honest Limits
Affect labeling is a dimmer switch, not an off switch. The measured effects are moderate: the amygdala quiets, it does not shut down. Labeling in the moment will not resolve what caused the emotion, and it is not a substitute for treatment when anxiety or low mood is persistent. It is best understood as the first move in a longer sequence: name the feeling, then work with it. Does saying feelings out loud actually do anything?
Yes, and the effect shows up on brain scans. In UCLA research led by Matthew Lieberman, matching an emotion word to an emotional face reduced amygdala activity and engaged the right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, a region involved in regulation. Speaking the label out loud, writing it down, or even choosing it from a list all count as affect labeling.
Is naming emotions the same as venting?
No. Venting tends to mean re-telling the story of what happened, often on repeat, which can slide into rumination and keep arousal high. Affect labeling is narrower: you name the emotion itself, ideally with precision. 'I feel dread about tomorrow's meeting' is a label. Re-litigating the meeting for twenty minutes is not.
How specific should the label be?
More specific tends to work better. Research on emotional granularity, led by psychologist Lisa Feldman Barrett and colleagues, finds that people who distinguish their emotions finely, separating irritated from disappointed from anxious, regulate emotion better than people who just feel generically bad. If 'stressed' is all you have, start there, then ask what kind.
Why does it work if it feels like doing nothing?
Researchers call affect labeling a form of implicit emotion regulation: it dampens the emotional response without you deliberately trying to feel better. Notably, participants in labeling studies usually predict it will not help, and some expect it to make things worse. The benefit does not depend on believing in it.
Is affect labeling a treatment for anxiety?
It is a skill, not a treatment. Labeling has been shown to improve outcomes when added to exposure for specific fears, and it is a component of many therapies, but on its own it is a moment-to-moment regulation tool. If anxiety is interfering with your life, a licensed clinician is the right next step, and labeling remains useful alongside whatever they recommend.
